How to Spot a Fake iPhone in Ghana

Test 1: Check the IMEI Number

Dial *#06# on the phone. An IMEI should appear. Go to checkcoverage.apple.com and enter it. If the phone is genuine, Apple's website will show the model, purchase date, and warranty status. A fake phone's IMEI won't appear or will show a different model.

Test 2: Verify the IMEI Matches the Box and Settings

The IMEI on the box, the IMEI shown by dialling *#06#, and the IMEI in Settings > General > About must all match. If any of them differ, something is wrong.

Test 3: Check iCloud Status

Go to Settings > [Top of screen]. If it shows "Sign in to your iPhone", the phone is iCloud-free — good. If it shows someone else's name or email, the phone is iCloud locked to a previous owner and you will not be able to set it up as your own. Walk away.

You can also check at icloud.com/find — enter the IMEI to check activation lock status.

Test 4: Check Battery Health

Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. A genuine phone will show a percentage. Anything below 80% on a phone being sold as "new" is a red flag. A phone with 100% battery health but is clearly used and scratched may have had its battery replaced (which isn't bad) or the reading could be faked (which is bad).

Test 5: Test Face ID

Set up Face ID. It should work reliably every time you raise the phone. On fake iPhones, Face ID either doesn't exist (replaced by a basic face unlock) or fails frequently.

Test 6: Feel the Weight

Genuine iPhones have a specific weight. An iPhone 12 weighs 162g. A fake will usually feel noticeably lighter or heavier. If you've ever held a genuine iPhone, a clone will feel wrong immediately.

Test 7: Check the App Store

Open the App Store. On a genuine iPhone, it opens the real Apple App Store. On a fake Android phone disguised as an iPhone, you'll see a fake store or it won't open at all.

Test 8: Test Siri

Hold the side button to activate Siri. Say "Hey Siri" — it should respond instantly. Fake iPhones often have a broken or non-functional Siri.

Test 9: Check the Settings Menu Depth

Go to Settings > General > About. You should see a comprehensive menu. Fake iPhones often have shallow or incomplete settings menus because they're running a fake iOS skin over Android.

Test 10: Inspect the Build Quality

Feel the chamfered edges, the button click, the speaker grille. Genuine Apple products have a specific fit and finish that is very hard to clone perfectly. Look at the Apple logo — it should be centered, smooth, and flush with the body. Check the lightning or USB-C port — the contacts inside should be gold-coloured and even.
