How to locate, lock, and protect your iPhone in Ghana — and what to do if it is stolen
Find My iPhone is Apple's built-in device tracking feature, now called simply "Find My" on newer iOS versions. It lets you locate your iPhone on a map, play a sound to find it nearby, lock it remotely with a message, or erase all your data if you know it is gone for good.
In Ghana, where phone theft is a real concern especially in busy areas of Accra like Okaishie, Kaneshie Market, and Makola, knowing how Find My works could save your phone — or at least your data.
Find My uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi triangulation, and Bluetooth to locate your device. It works on MTN, Vodafone, and AirtelTigo mobile data. Even when the phone is offline, it can still be tracked via Apple's encrypted network of hundreds of millions of Apple devices globally.

On your iPhone, open the Settings app (the grey gear icon).
At the top of Settings, tap your name (your Apple ID profile).
Scroll down and tap Find My.
Tap "Find My iPhone" and toggle it on. Also enable "Send Last Location" — this sends your phone's last known location to Apple when the battery dies.
Toggle on "Find My network" as well. This allows your phone to be located even when offline by bouncing a signal off nearby Apple devices.
If your iPhone goes missing in Accra or anywhere in Ghana:
You can also do this from a browser at icloud.com/find — useful if you are on a different phone or computer.
When you mark your iPhone as Lost, iOS automatically locks it with your passcode and displays a custom message on the screen — for example your phone number or a reward offer. The iPhone cannot be used until your Apple ID and password are entered. Your credit cards and transit cards in Apple Pay are also suspended automatically.
In Ghana, if someone finds your phone, a visible message with your number gives them a chance to contact you. Many honest finders will call.
Activation Lock is Find My's theft-deterrent feature. When Find My is on, Activation Lock is automatically enabled. This means even if someone wipes your iPhone completely, they cannot set it up or use it without your Apple ID and password. It renders a stolen iPhone essentially useless to anyone who does not know your credentials.
This is exactly why buying an iCloud locked iPhone in Ghana is a serious risk. A phone with Activation Lock active from a previous owner's account cannot be used. It is not repairable by any shop in Accra — not even Apple stores can bypass Activation Lock without the original owner's credentials.
