Crash Detection is the headline new feature in the Series 8. It uses the watch’s accelerometer (now capable of detecting up to 256g forces) and gyroscope to identify the motion pattern of a serious vehicle collision. If triggered, it shows an alert — if you don’t dismiss it within 10 seconds, it automatically calls emergency services and shares your location.
In Accra’s traffic conditions, this feature is genuinely relevant. Road accidents are unfortunately common in Ghana, and being able to automatically call for help after a collision when you might be unconscious or incapacitated could save your life or someone else’s.
The wrist temperature sensor tracks skin temperature variations throughout the day and night. It is used for cycle tracking (detecting ovulation patterns), sleep quality analysis, and general health trend monitoring. It does not tell you your body temperature directly but detects deviations from your personal baseline.
The Series 8 adds Crash Detection, wrist temperature sensor, and Bluetooth 5.3 (vs 5.0 on Series 7). The display and design are identical — same size options, same Always-On Retina screen, same case materials. Battery life is the same 18 hours standard.
If the price gap between Series 7 and 8 at PixelDrop GH is significant, the Series 7 remains an excellent choice — you miss Crash Detection and temperature sensing but get everything else. If the gap is small, the Series 8 is the better long-term purchase for its safety and health features.
